i love what vancouver did. good pick up for then. Definitely. They're over the cap by over two million now though I believe, so more to come.

I think this is strictly a salary dump for San Jose, they were over the cap and now they're not. Good situation. Vancouver did this because they needed depth in defense bad, and now they got it.
If when you said that it was a pre-curser to another, bigger deal you were reffering to Heatley going to San Jose. I don't think it's gonna happen. They wouldn't make a salary dump like that and add a ginormous contract like Heatley's right after. Even if they made the salary dump for a player, they now have room to sign Tanguay or Comrie who are good for 70-80/60-70 points each if they stay healthy. For under 5mil/year. I'd take that over Heatley, Ron Wilson would be stupid not to.

Seeing as Tanguay signed with Tampa last night, I'm pretty sure that's out of the question. Zherdev maybe? Either way, I know what you mean.
Whatever way you look at it though, Heatley is going to be traded. San Jose just made a big cap dump (more than they needed to; all they needed to do was get under the cap and instead they cleared 5 million of space). It just makes sense that this was what it was for. I might be wrong, but you can't deny that it makes a ton of sense now as all they need to do is send pieces that Ottawa likes for the deal to get done, and no longer have to include mandatory pieces just to get under the cap.
I can't wait to see what happens.

They way I saw the trade was that it was meant to bring depth to Vancouver's defense, and a salary dump for San Jose. Also, keep in mind after San Jose signs RFA's they will only have roughly 1 million left under the cap(Or so I read on HF Boards, not a terribly reliable source, I know). I can see how anyone would assume that this deal was made so that a deal can be made for Heatley, but I'm not sold. After all the rumors I've heared this summer, I will only believe it when I see it.
I'm not gonna deny that's it's possible, but at the same time I'm leaning toward it just being another rumor.

Well yeah, it's just speculation at this point. However, the point is that the Sharks chose a very odd player to trade as a "cap dump." It's really weird that Ehrhoff was basically given away. That's why we can only believe that there is something else in the works, something bigger. This trade alone as it stands just makes no sense, even with the whole reasoning behind needing the cap space.
