The broad street bullies are back? Thats what fans must be thinking. GM Paul Holmgren made some key aquisions this offseason. He started off by sending over young and skilled RW Joffrey Lupul and defensive prospect Luca Sbisda, along with 2 first round picks and a conditional 3rd round pick for Defensive powerhouse Chris Pronger and prospect Ryan Dingle.
With the addition of Pronger, the Flyers have gotten the shutdown defenseman they needed. At 6'6"-220 pounds, Pronger is one of the league’s toughest players and most feared hitters. In addition to making this team immeasurably tougher, he helps them in many other ways.
He brings offensive firepower from the blue line, veteran leadership and experience, and surprisingly good skating ability for such a big player.
Paul also followed up by signing UFA Ian Laperriere to a 3 year for $3.501 million. Also the addition of Ray Emery should be something to watch out for as well. He signed for 1 year at $1.5 million, he is being given a chance to come back into the NHL as Philadelphia's number one goal tender.
Emery led the Ottawa Senators to the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals. However, he was released by Ottawa after a string of off-ice incidents. After spending last season in Russia’s KHL, Emery is said to be a changed man. If he can stay out of trouble, the Flyers will have a goaltender who is capable of helping them win the Cup.
The Flyers have added some big players who like to play a rough style of hockey. This should make it a little more intimidating for other teams to play against. The Flyers also have other players who are well known for running up their PIM stats.
Daniel Carcillio who has lead the league for two consecutive seasons in penalty minutes should probably find himself among the top few next season as well. With 254 last season and 324 the one before, Carcillio is definitely looking at some good ice time next season.
Also another player who loves to drop the gloves and get penalties is Riley Cote ranked 7th last year for PIM with 174 in only 63 games played, he is another of the Flyers big broad street bullies.
Ian Laperriere ranked himself in at 11th last season with 163 and should add more fighting depth this season.
Right winger Arron Asham found his goon-like skills ranking him in at 15th with 155. Nearly doubling his PIMs from the previous season.
You could even count on skilled forward Scott Hartnell to rack up some PIMs along side some hefty points.
All this to show that the Flyers have some intimidating strong guys 4 of which were ranked in the top 15 last season.
The Flyers also have all that it takes to compete offensively and not only defensively. They found themselves ranked at 5th last season in the league for goals for with 260. This created a tie for fourth with the Chicago Black Hawks. Philly also ranked 6th in the league for PP% with 22.5%. All this with the help of some of the following players.
Such as Jeff Carter who is a goal scoring machine ranked second in the NHL last season. If he keeps doing what he’s paid for he could be once again a big part of the Flyers success this upcoming season. Mike Richards is another top player for the Flyers. Playing as their top playmaker with 50 assists he also managed to get 30 goals.
Both Richards and Carter are still young and are still going to develop into better players. Already amassing 164 points between the two of them, there is nothing to say they cant get more next season.
Other top forwards are Simon Gagne a consistent 30 goal scorer as long as his injuries dont get the better of him... The surprising Scott Hartnell is another player to watch out for this upcoming season. Also raking in 30 goals last season, he should be good for another 25-35 goals this season. At 35 that would be quite generous.
With 4 players who are capable of scoring 30 goals or the Flyers shouldn’t have to worry about finding the back of the net. Also with the returning Danny Briere who is well capable of scoring 30 goals and setting up plays the Flyers could definitely be finding themselves in a top 5 playoff spot.
Despite losing a great young forward in Lupul and solid veteran m
Mike Knuble the Flyers fans should not have to much to worry about. Still in the system are great young prospects Claude Giroux, James vanRiemsdyk and Ryan Parent. Giroux played a total of 44 games last season and scored 27 points for his team. Still young and full of talent he will probably find a spot on the roster this season if not the next.
On the other hand JVR should probably show up next season for a few games. As well as Ryan Parent who also appeared in 31 games last season.
Bottom line is that the flyers are definitely a playoff team and also a dangerous team to watch out for when playing against! Im excited to see how they do this season... What do you guys think??
