The Toronto Maple Leafs have started off the season terribly. Posting a 1-7-5 for only 7 points. The leafs only have 31 goals for. This ranks them 23rd in the league. How ever Toronto is ranked first in the league for goals against with 51. The leafs also average more than 3 goals against every game. This my friends is a sad tale for a team that had a lot of people thinking they might be a playoff team.
How ever... the leafs have not had the valuble Phil Kessell with them since the beggining of the season. With him healed now and back out on the rink maybe time for a turn around?
Also some of the leafs players such as Jason Blake who has been known as the teams goal scorer for quite some time, has only knotched 1 goal in 13 games and only 7 points.
Francois Beauchemein is another player whose points have not yet been seen much of on the score sheet. With only 4 points in 13 games he has also been off to a slow start.
Mike Komisarek has just been rakeing in penalty minutes. He is second on the team with 31 and has not put up a single point. How ever he is a whopping minus 10. He is the lead player on his team for negative plus minus rateing and clearly needs to change his game plan if he wants a more successfull season with the leafs.
Also burdend with inconsistant goal tenders, this also causes a problem.
The young Jonas Gaustavsson shows some hope at eventually leading the team to some key wins. He has the teams only win, and leads the team with over time losses at 3. He also records a .901 save %. He is also the only goaltender on the team under 3.00 GAA.
Another player who has been outstanding for the leafs is Tomas Kaberle. Hes got himself 17 points in 13 games and leads the leafs for points and assists.
Hagman may lead the team for goals but that was a one game hat trick that got him the lead in goals. He doesn't seem to consistent in his goal scoring. But seeing as he has put up 2 consecutive 20 goal plus season im confident he will open up.
Ponikarovski is another player with a bit of a slow start. How ever he is second on the team for goal scoring with 5. He also leads the team for +/- and on a team that only has two players who are + he happens to be the one with +5 to lead the team.
Will the leafs pick up soon?
I think they will...
How ever the sad thing of all this is... if they do flop this year its all for nothing. Its kind of a sad thing to think about but even in all this misery, and if it keeps up its all for nothing.
This is another reason why I think the team will get motivated and pick up sometime in the near future.
