Atlanta got a pretty good return. Bergfors is a good young player, Oduya's a solid top 4 D, Cormier is a fairly promising prospect and a first is usually pretty good.
If Kovalchuk chooses not to sign with the Devils, and if they don't go far in the play-offs, I'd say they got spanked in this deal.

bad trade Atl could had got more if they would had let the team talk to Kov. to sign a deal. I like say they could had got more.

It's a better return than what Hossa got as an impending UFA IMO. In a season where trades just don't happen anymore. I think it was good. Especially for ATL's future.

Kovalchuk's agent already said publicly that they will be testing Free Agency in the offseason. There's no way he could have signed with a team before the trade. Knowing this, I think Atlanta got a pretty good return for a player they were going to lose either way.

What would have been a good return in your opinion?

its really hard to pick players from the devils line up, i had him going to LA. But I would had try to get 1 roster player, 1 young guy playing in the juniors and 2 draft picks.

The thing is though, Atlanta is not really rebuilding anymore, they're pushing for the playoffs. I'm sure the plan is to have Bergfors replace at least a portion of Kovalchuk's production, and I would not be surprised to see them bring in another forward at the deadline.

RW Niclas Bergfors: been in and out of the line up, they say he is a top 6 forward he isn't
D Johnny Oduya: going to have problems in ATL because he isn't a top dmen. Was good in new jersey because of the system they play.
F Patrice Cormier: not even going to start with him
a first-round pick and second-round pick: going to be bad picks at the end of the day

I think Bergfors has a higher ceiling than you expect him to. Same with Cormier. You never know with first rounders though. Some late picks can turn out to be stars.

Cormier will be an NHL player no doubt. He just has to grow up a bit, and I'm sure this last incident rattled him. Bergfors was also on a great pace earlier this season. Some people were even saying that he would be in the race for the Calder. Consistency comes with age, I have no doubt that Bergfors will be a valuable asset to Atlanta. The pick is a gamble, but you never know. And the best thing about Oduya is that it makes Kubina expendable; he's a UFA this year and they'll probably be able to deal him to a contender at the deadline for some more good young assets or picks.
Considering the circumstances, I think Atlanta did very well. Obviously, nothing can compare to losing a franchise player like Kovalchuk, but since they were going to lose him anyway, getting a good young top-six forward, top-four defenseman in his prime, top prospect, and a first rounder... That's pretty good.

no problem with that VD, I guess we will know by the end of the season or in a couple of years who wins this trade. I have a feeling that Kov. is going to the KHL, rumor has it that there is a team that is ready to give him the big bucks.
