By the sounds of it, Volchenkov will likely be moved at the deadline. Murray said today, in terms of contract they've gotten no where.

If he does, I'm betting he goes to Washington.
There's also been some trades today... Leopold went to Pittsburgh, and Grebeshkov to Nashville. Each for a 2nd I believe.

Yeah I was about to post that, but I had to leave. There was a small trade too involving Evgeny Artyukhin for Nathan Oystrick and a conditional pick.
If he's not traded there, he's gonna sign there this summer if not Ottawa. Ovechkin, Semin and Volchenkov usually talk for a long time after every Sens-Caps games.

I would be shock if ottawa trades volchenkov. I wouldn't trade him at all. you have a playoff spot. that would be a bad move.
can't wait to the deadline

I would be surprise too. Volchenkov's the type of guy you want in a playoff run, especially in ottawa's case, where there really isn't anyone to replace him, even through trade.
But you can't let a guy like Volchenkov walk on July 1st though. Muckler made that mistake with Chara and Redden screwed us over that way. But if you're gonna let him go, trade him and get some value back. Because we're gonna be regretting it next season if we don't make it far in the play-offs and he chooses to sign with another team.

Yup. Gainey took a lot of heat for the whole Souray situation a few years ago, and now the same kind of thing is happening with Plekanec. We'll see what Gauthier decides to do.
It's always easier to judge in hindsight.

Yeah that was another one.
To add on to what Carson was saying about Volchenkov, the Sens just acquired Andy Sutton today, so maybe this makes him (more) expendable? Not sure, Carson will be able to provide more insight most likely... Either way, added depth is never bad.
Names being thrown around right now for possible deals include Whitney, Wolski, Ponikarovsky, Huet, Vokoun...

Yeah, Andy Sutton for SJ 2nd. Some of Sens fans are calling for Murrays head on this one. I'm rather neutral about it. Our D is now quite a bit slower but a lot (ALOT) better at defense. It was getting thin, to the point where Derek Smith was called up against Detroit. So adding a defenseman was a good thing for depth. The only question marks about the trade was why not a mobile defenseman? Why such a high price? And what does this mean for Volchenkov? The D corpse could use a bit more mobility. So you would have to question bringing in a defensive guy. With Phillips, Carkner, Sutton, Volchenkov (for the time being, at least), a struggling Kuba and an injured Campoli...That leaves a lot of pressure on Karlsson to produce some offense. Leopold and Grebeshkov got 2nd rounds and they are undoubtedly better. Why was Sutton so pricey? I know the SJ 2nd isn't as valuable as a Pittsburgh 2nd or a Nashville 2nd, but we could have easily sent a 3rd the other way. It also makes you wonder why Murray thought the asking price for Leopold was so high, when we got Sutton for the same price that Pittsburgh got Leopold for. When Leopold is better. Just strange logic. As for Volchenkov, I don't see how Sutton can be seen as a replacement for him. I think he will stay, for the time being. That said, if Sutton is a replacement, that's a bad way of doing it. But I like the trade overall. Adds some good depth to our blueline, and keeps Campoli out of the line-up. Some interesting stats about Sutton are, at 34 years old, it's arguably his best season yet, he's 2nd in the league for blocked shots. He only averages about 60 games a season though, so f he gets injured, this trade could easily backfire. How's that for insight Vince?

Good post Carson.
Yeah I thought it was a little steep, but it seems to be the going rate for everybody this year.

Ponikarovsky is gone to the pens in a deal tonight.
